Re: New Tamron XR DI SP 70-200mm F2.8 Lens

Has anyone actually gotten their hands on the new Tamron 70-200mm F2.8 lens? I am reading some great reviews and I am positively drooling over it and I want to hear if anyone has actually used the lens and get their opinions.

If the lens is as good as it supposedly is it may just bury Canon for a long time to come in the 70-200 F2.8 department. I have been looking at the 70-200mm F4 L but for only $100.00 more this Tamron lens is extremely attractive and I certainly do not have the extra $2,500.00 for the Canon 70-200 F2.8 L nor do I think the lens is worth all the hype it gets so I am definitely interested in hearing what others have to say about this new Tamron lens.

I thought the same thing, Dave, except I shoot Nikon. The problem I run into with the lens is that it isn't a VR/IS lens. It is an amazing price but I would need the VR that Nikon offers, unfortunately I have to pay over twice the price for the Nikon.

dpreview.com has been reviewing the 2.8 70-200 lenses from Canon, Nikon, Tamron and Sigma for comparison. I shoot Nikon, but I've liked the one Tamron lens I have. I've been drooling over the thought of this Tamron lens myself for a while, but their review gives me pause. It came off testing well overall, but they said the autofocus motor is loud and slow.

Autofocus is not Tamron's strong point, and all reviews I've read suggest that this lens is not much different. I would rather have a lens with fast, reliable autofocus like the Canon versions.
