I have been asked to do a calender by a local store. Can anyone or someone tell me as much or as little as you know about doing calenders.
Thanks, George

One of the things that might be helpful to you, is to contact a printer that does calendars. There will be some specifications you will need to know about as you photograph and design the calendar pages.

Here's what I've learned from several calendar shoots ---
Do ... contact a printer first to get their specs
Do ... bring a lot of backup equipment
Do ... shoot RAW so you have more colors to work with and more lattitude when you edit the images
Do ... get paid for all your time, preferably in advanced.
Do ... scout locations in advanced
Do ... tell models to arrive an hour or two in advance of when you really need them
Do ... hire an assistant. Even if you've never work with an assistant on a shoot, a good assistant can help speed things up and allow you to spend some quality with the client.
Don't ... take a percentage over payment. Most calendars (those without a big corporate sponsor) don't make money.
Don't ... think that all the models will actually show up. Bring backup models.
Don't ... think you can shoot more than a few models in a day (and do it right)
Don.t ... forget to HAVE FUN!
Just my opinion.

As far as advice, I have to ditto what Marty said, that's excellent advice, coming from somebody who has worked in the printing industry from color corrections in pre-press to printing the ads themselves to pulling the finished product off of the truck. While you might not be able to get the exact icc profile from the printing company, if they actually have made one for their presses, usually US Swop v 2.0 (it's a CYMK) profile works pretty good, but when in doubt, use your best judgement as far as an icc profile is concerned. But, anyways, with regards to your question abou who to use as a printer, depending on your situation, the person who asked you to do the calander may have a printer in mind already. But if not, take a look in your area for printers and see what they offer, and then go from there. I'm sorry I can't give more precise infromation on the subject, but hopefully the info I have given can be of some use to you.

Isaiah

I wish I had Marty's advice when I did my calender. I learned a lot about what not to do and what to look for next time, but that advice would have saved me some headaches!

I used Cafe Press for mine but it was for a girl to give to her husband. Wasn't really happy with the final product but that was probably just as much me as it was them... if not more me!
