A story on the Washington Post technology web page indicates that Canon will build a new factory for point and shoot cameras in China. Last year Canon shipped over 24 .7 MILLION cameras. They're also building a printer factory in Vietnam.

It does pay to advertise...

Elvis has left the building...

Yep on both accounts.
This is not meant to be Nikon vs Canon but might be interesting to read ...

What few people know is why Nikon lost ground to Canon -

Nikon outsourced all NON semiconductor equipment manufacture in late 80's.
That includes stuff like cameras, lenes, sunglasses, microscopes, etc.
Their BIG business became semiconductor microelectronics equipment in the 80's - Intel was most influential on this and their biggest client. It became all their attention and accounted for 70% revenue. Everone was happy.
I used to buy Nikon semiconductor equipment and cameras. I was Happy.
In the 90's Nikon lenes were slower in AF than Canon and they lost ground to pro photo journalists - esp in sports. But they were not too concerned since they only got 10% revenue from Photo at that time.
In late 90's Nikons Ebeam Litho R&D project {SCAPEL type litho} went belly up along with all the other SCALPEL Technology. The wrote off well over 200 Millon $$. It effected the whole company and took years just getting back in good standing.
They did come out with Digital before Canon in early 2000's but Canon outpaced them in technology and re investment. The whole semiconductor market went on a downslide.
Nikon only recently came out with FFDSLR with the D3.
For what its worth they also lost 100 % of the photomask metrology market to new player Leica after having it as their own domain for over 20 years.
They even lied about their IP in those bad years but still the Sunatory and Girls came to their customers.

So ... the moral of the story is they went hog wild on something that went bust - both Ebeam and Microelectronics and now appear to be back in photo on a more serious nature.

It could happen to anyone but better to stay more diverse like Canon who also manufactures semiconductor equipment.

Hope you enjoyed the story ...
