I was looking through through an electronics magazine and they had a short article that some microdrive manufacturers are scaling back production as the flash memory drives take over the market.

The flash memory based microdrives have consistently gotten bigger (I think Samsung now has a 80 GB on the market), and don't have the reliability issues that the mechanical drives have. You can probably even run them through a laundry wash cycle as you can many of the USB memory drives. And they are increasingly price competitive.

I'd bet we see 200 GB flash memory microdrives on the market in 2008. That's a LOT of pictures, even shooting raw. Will the camera OS's and batteries keep up? Who knows...

Those are SSDs, Solid State Drives, that are intended to replace standard 2.5" and 1.8" hard disks in notebooks and other portable devices. They have the same form factor as the drives that they are meant to replace and will not fit in any DSLR that you might want to carry around all day. Perhaps in the external storage unit for a Hasselblad H3DII-39. Samsung's largest announced size is 64GB. Toshiba has announced a 128GB version, but price hasn't been announced and I don't think I want to know.

The CompactFlash spec currently tops out at 137GB, with the largest cards currently available being 32GB. The SDHC (high capacity version of SD card) spec goes up to 32GB, with the largest currently available being 16GB. Still a lot of pictures, even shooting raw.

I just read an article that Toshiba announced a 500GB 2.5" laptop dirve that will be shipping in February.

500GB on a laptop! That is just cool....
