I'm about to take the plunge into digital and buy a Canon 10D. I have a tendency to shoot lots of frames. I don't have a laptop and I work a lot on location.

What sort of portable storage devices do you use?

I want to get a 512 card. Any brand suggestions?

Any brand warnings as in "This card ate my work"?

Thanks,
Bruce

Bruce:

First check to see what kind of card the 10D takes. If CF (compact flash), then Sandisk invented the technology. Stay away from SM (smart media) because it seems too temperamental (I went through a half a dozen before I learned my lesson). XD, SD, MS all seem OK. If the 10D is CF then check to see if it is compatible with high speed read/write. The CF's come in a high speed flavor specially designed for photographers that take a lot of frames (depending on the memory buffer of the camera). If the 10D is compatible with high speed write, then get a high speed CF card (will run you about 200-250 dollars). If the camera is not compatible, then any old run of the mill CF card will do. This means that the camera controls the write speed as in my Olympus E-10. I purchased two 512mg CF cards by Sandisk for 109 dollars a piece at Microcenter through a price match (actually a misprint in Ritz Camera's flyer). I have seen them all over the internet (ebay) for 100 bucks. Lexar also seems to make a good product. The CF cards are the most durable from any of the media I have seen, read or experienced. Hope this helps.

for the storage check out the stuff on this page . But I would suggest checking out APEX for better prices.

I am using a 1 microdrive and a lexar 256 16x cf card right now.
If you go with the lexar cards don't buy the one with the Write Acceleration. Because the 10D can't utilize it. (yet hopefully) Rumors I have read on the net suggest a firmware update that might allow this function in the future. but with the 16x speed I have not had any problems. Now with the 4x speed, slow as christmas. I have used a couple of different cards in my 10D, and all worked so I guess it is just a brand preferrence. According to Crucial.com. all flash memory is made by one or two companies, then third parties buy the guts and put shells with their stickers on them. not sure how true this is though
