I was asked to take a picture of this hat ( http://photo.net/photos/__Nash__ ). My complaint is the reflection in the hat. I tried inside the building, outside, shade, bounce flash, polarizer, differant angles, sunlight and the yellow reflection tape on the hat lit up when I put bounce flash to it and nothing work to my satisfaction. How would you have done this hat without moving it into a studio? How would you do it if you were in the studio? I had 30 minutes to do it.

1) Your URL is poorly formed. Both Firefox and IE interpret it as being http://photo.net/photos/__Nash which results in a Not Found error. Please remove the underscoring. I had to cut & paste the full URL to look at your picture.

2) Reflective subjects reflect their environment. There are two basic approaches to dealing with this. You can make the subject less reflective with a dulling spray, which may or may not be appropriate to the situation. Or, you can control what it reflects by controlling the environment. This is what light tents are used for. You light through, and shoot through holes in, the sides of the tent. This is a typical example:

Or you can make something yourself out of diffusion fabric or translum.

I would like to make a tent. Can you tell me which fabric is best or lead me to the best tutorial on the subject?

Thanks

Which is the best material. nylon, cotton, silk, paint etc. Maybe a parachute. It looks like it would be about 8'x 8'x8'. Next which in your opinion is the best low heat lights? Looking for people opinions that have worked with different materials and styles ect so I do not waste money and time.

You can buy the smaller light tents cheaper than you can build them. I bought a 3' x 3' x 3' cube one several years ago on ebay for $25.00. Works like a champ. I usually use those twist florescent bulbs in a cheap reflector with a clip. I use 4 lights for stuff in the tent.

Cheers,
rfs
