I will be attending a Memphis Grizzlies game next week and I will be in what they call a floor suite. This is 17 rows back from the edge of the floor and elevated over the seats in front of me. This is the view I will have:

My question is if I bring my Canon 5D with my 100-400mm 4.5-5.6 L IS lens, would there be enough light for this set up to get some good shots? I will have a table where I can use a tripod, but I'm not sure if the photos would be blurred or not.

Any suggesstions on what settings I should start at?

I also have the 24-70 2.8 lens, but that wont get me close enough, I don't think!

I really do appreciate the help from all of you who contribute to this website and the forums!

Thanks again!

Pete

Normally you are not allowed to bring in a camera that has a removable lens to an NBA game without press (must be NBA issued) credentials. And even if you were given press creds, you'd have to shoot at least at ISO 1250 with your F/4.5 lens as you are not allowed to use a flash unless it's mounted in the rafters. And if you get that far, what good is a tripod if the players are moving? You have to have a shutter speed of at least 1/320 to really stop action w/o flash in an NBA game.

Just my thoughts, just shot the Spurs/Kings game this past Friday and this is my fourth year shooting the Spurs. Sometimes I use existing light, sometimes I'll use a colleague's flash units. I might add, this past game I shot sitting next to a friend of mine that shoots for the AP and he was shooting existing light (he prefers this as I do, we use the light reflected off the floor), at ISO 1250 with the Canon 70-200 F/2.8 IS L USM (whatever the letters are) on one camera and the other camera always has the 300mm F/2.8.

I hope that helps, all the best, but check on bringing your camera in first, they normally will not allow something like the 5D at all, only small point and shoots. Photos below from last season. The main difference with or without flash is the depth of field, though we lower our ISO to 400 when using flash. Thanks, rg sends!
