I've started selling matted prints on my non-glamour website michaelsmithphotography.biz using PayPal to process the payment and UPS to handle the shipping and I've got a couple of questions. My mat sizes currently range from 5"x7" to 16"x20" and I expect to use padded envelopes to ship them in. For the time being, I plan to do all the packing myself and use a local UPS store as the dropoff point. I know some of you sell images off your website but do you sell prints? Any tips about using Paypal and UPS would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any advice!
Mike

I wouldn't use UPS or padded envelopes to ship prints. You can get free shipping supplies from the post office if you ship via priority mail.
Their boxes are perfect for prints, but you need to use styro foam peanuts to fill the empty space in the box. No matter how padded your envelope is, they would just fold it right in half and I'm sure you know that's not good for prints or matts.

I am going to second that. Boxes are a must. I have even seen photo mailers (cardboard envelopes) folded in half to fit in a mail box by the USPS if they were not explicitly marked "DO NOT BEND".

The reason I was told that many people send via UPS (or other couriers) is that they provide tracking whereas USPS doesn't. I am in Canada so I can't say definitely that this is so but I wouldn't doubt it as I think much is the same up here.

If you are sending a matted print to a customer I would also suggest that the better packaging would be a box versus an envelope but you may be okay if you plaster "Photographs - Do not bend" all over whatever way you go.

Also something to consider is insurance if by postal service. An angry customer complaining of mishandling is not going to be very pleased and the insurance should cover any reprint/remat/resending of the article. You will have to take that into account with your pricing.
