I think selling them off for cheap is a mistake. I have three or four 283's and a full set of the accessories, including a couple of the AC power sources and the vari-power modules. I keep them around along with a supply of new batteries and several light activated triggers.

If I need an accent light or maybe want to splash a little colored light on a background or whatever, they're very hard to beat.

And if you are doing a location shoot having a little extra directable light available can mean the difference between so so and great. Sure beats carrying a power pack and heads everywhere.

I have an old briefcase with a foam insert with several of them and the accessory stuff in it. Also have a few extra aluminum lightstands. This goes with me, and maybe it stays in the car, but when it's needed, it's available.

Think about it.

I read about a architecture photog. who had about 50 of them that he would use as hide-a-ways, accents, etc... I am thinking of them for fill on my dslr's when i go around bikeweek ect... set it for a f5.6 light or something...

What is the major difference between 283 and 285?

I'm running with Canon gear and only have one 550ex. I'd like to stick with Canon but the prices!!!...even with the strong Canadian dollar, it's still a bite in the pocket.

I have 4 or 5 (with AC adapters) that I have had for at leat 20 years! What a home run for Vivitar...can you think of any other electronic photo gear that has lasted that long? Although I also have a Wein 500 flash meter the I still see offered at B&H!

There is a reason it was the number one back up flash for most PJ shooters for ages.... Nd these days I thinks it the best option if you can't afford a $300-400 nikon/canon flash ect... Not that the 285 is not an option...

Actually, I think the 285 is a better unit than the 283 Jayson. The guts of the two are pretty much the same though, the 285 just has a zoom head. The only other real difference is that the thyristor that comes with the 285 has manual output settings where the 283's thyristor does not.

I've had a 285 for around 13 years now and it still works like a champ. I've had to take it apart a couple times to solder the wires back onto the flash tube from overheating it a few times. But it still works, even though I had to poor water out of it after shooting the aftermath of a tornado about 10 years ago.

Anyway, check this blog out. http://www.strobist.blogspot.com/ I think it should be required reading for all photographers.
