Hi gang, I'm looking for info regarding the Canon Wireless Transmitter. I've been using a firewire cable connected to my 1D markII cameras and my laptop. The cable has never been very stable or reliable. I'm considering buying the wireless transmitter but the guy at Samy's Camera here in Los Angeles tried to steer me away from that product by saying that unless your a network specialist...you'll have great difficultly in making it work correctly. So I would like to hear from others who have used or are currently using the Canon Wireless Transmitter. What is your experience with this device?

I've been using the WFT-E1 transmitter on my 1DmkII since last year in combination with my 17" Powerbook and Adobe Lightroom. It's kind of a pain in the butt at first to get all the settings configured right. But once you get it set up, it rocks being able to shoot and seconds later see it on the big screen of your laptop.

This site helped me with the settings:

Yes, Firewire or USB cable is the much more affordable option. I originally bought the WFT-E1 for shooting events like wedding receptions - much more mobility than being tethered.

The only other drawback besides the networking setup is that the transmitter does add a bit of bulk to the camera (I have the first generation version).

I have mine attached to the side of my 1DMkII via a ReallyRightStuff L-bracket. That along with a longer antenna lets me send shots to my laptop from across a ballroom.

The new version that was announced at the same time as the 1DMkIII is much smaller and (so they say) easier to set up.
