I recently purchased a second hand Nikon 80-200 f/2.8 lens, but I can't seem to get my autofocus to focus it quite right. I have attached a test shot here in the hopes that someone can tell me what I need to do. The left side is a manual focus and the right is autofocus.

Here are the facts
1) Lens will not focus properly on my D200
2) Lens will focus properly on a friend's D70
3) Other lenses seem to focus properly on my D200
4) I can see that the focus is off in the viewfinder and manually focus it crystal clear.

So, does this seem to be the lens, or the body? I can't tell.

Here is a shot with my Tamron 28-75 XR Di R2 D2 C3PO f/2.8 as an extreme close up macro shot using autofocus.

It's odd that other lenses will AF correctly on your D200, but the 80-200 will not. I would expect all lenses to be off or the bad lens work the same on other bodies. Are you shooting at the same f-stop?

You might download a focus chart (http://focustestchart.com/chart.html) and test to see if it is focusing front or back of the point. This was an early issue on some D200 bodies. There is an internal adjustment for the issue.

Make sure to use a tripod at the 45 degree angle with the lens wide open. Change the ISO if you don't have enough light.

One you know that it's the body, Nikon should be able to adjust it for you.

Good luck.

I'm beginning to think it's the body. I tried the lens on my n90s and it focused fine. When I switched to manual focus I could not get a better focus than the AF system could acquire.

Yes I'm using the same aperture with each test. I've done some calibration charts before and they just verify that the focal point is behind what the auto-focus sensor believes it is.

It's highly possible that I have those internal issues. I got my D200 about 2 weeks after they started shipping. I may call Nikon and see what they say.

Ahhh yes. The dreaded back focus. I got my D200 on launch day and never had banding or back focus problems. Knock on wood I guess. Sounds like it's time for a visit to the Nikon shop...

Well after extensive research into the issue I have located posts on other forums where people have the exact same issue.

There seems to be an incompatibility between the D200 and the 80-200 lens. This issue is not present with the 70-200 VR. One person I read about sent his rig off to Nikon for repair and they sent it back saying they checked it and found no problems.

That's one reason why I don't buy my lenses second hand, I'd rather spend the extra money and be the first owner and get it right out of the box, but that is weird though, I'd take the recomenations of the previous posters to see if it is either the body or the lense. I have a D2X with an 18-200 VR Nikkor, and have had not a single problem with it.
