I like the way head shots look when a beautydish is used. So if you don't have one what would you do to create the same look ? Would you just put a mono light above at a 45 deg angle aimed down on the models face ? Maybe put a reflector facing up to bounce light back up to soften shadows ?

i don't think you're gonna duplicate the look of a beauty dish with that technique. i'm not sure what will duplicate it, if anything. if you're at all handy, you might try constructing a DIY dish. I know Don made one. (DDC Studios) And if Don can make one... Anyways, Don's DIY dish produces great results. You might try contacting him. Or, you might try Googling for "DIY Beauty Dish" or something like that.

Here is one that I made using stainless steel cooking bowl. The beauty
dishes that you buy would probably be white inside.

Hey that looks real good. How did it work for you ? I like the way the BD makes a close up head shot look. The catch lights in the models eyes look better when they are round.

I have a Mola BD and, yeah, it's white inside... actually, kind of an off-white slightly to the warmish side. The small, glass, baffle that sits in front of the flash tube is opalescent. I sometimes warm the baffle by putting a small piece of "straw" or "bastard amber" gel on it.

It does pretty good. The dishes that I have are smaller in diameter than
what you can buy but they do make round catch lights in the eyes.

Here is a sample using two of them.
