Not sure if it's the camera or something else. Notice, on the right side, the monolights and shutter curtain aren't synch'd: It's close... but no cigar. I was shooting w/ Canon 5D, f/5.6 @ 200, ISO 100, w/28-135mm Canon IS USM zoom. Off-camera monolights, radio triggered. The max synch speed on this camera is 200th of a sec. But, apparently, it wasn't synching. Not sure if it's an issue with the radio trigger, the camera itself, or maybe that synch speed is only guaranteed using Canon Speedlites? (Anyone? Anyone? Buehler? Anyone?)

Here's an example. I used an SN shot cuz those were the only ones that showed the white wall on the other side of that god-awful sculpture. The image is untouched except for size-reduction and the copyright.

Buehler here,....I have the cheap ebay radio triggers, and one time my lights fired, but the image was dark, so I tried slowing my shutter speed a stop at a time, from 200 to I think it was 1/80 if I remember correctly, before the lights were in sync,....proving to me that the batteries have to be fresh,....at least I think that was the problem?
Hope this helps somewhat.

Thanks, Ron! As I read your reply, I seemed to vaguely remember reading something... somewhere... that talked about weak batteries sometimes producing a sync problem. I sure hope it's a problem like that rather than the camera. Since 200 is, I believe, the max synch speed with that camera, anything slower would probly not be impacted by weak batteries.

I often seen warnings made my strobe manufacturers that one should set the shutter speed to at least 1 stop less than the published sync speed of the camera. I was under the impression that the Canon 5D's sync speed was 1/250th (that's what it is for the 20D). So if you set the sync speed to 1/125th, that might solve the problem. Give it a try.
Cheers,
rfs

FWIW, I actually just spent the afternoon reading about radio and IR triggering, and strobe sync circuits for my own needs. Many of the users of less expensive radio triggering devices commented that the devices didn't trigger as fast as the camera's maximum sync speed.

had that same problem...once again DeAnn saved me by replacing the batteries in the receiver....yup that was it...a real "DUH" moment...as I freaked and thought the shutter had just gone bad! Im over there in a huddle mass checking all the camera settings in a fret while the model was sitting waiting in position.....and DeAnn quietly replaces the batteries... I believe her quote was, "try it now dumbass" amazing what new batteries will fix! Dee Dee Dee!

My 5D will not do better then 1/125. Pocket Wizzards with fresh batteries. Real bummer for outdoor shots. 20D will synch up to 1/250.

Jimmy, I shoot with the 5D and Pocket Wizards and have the same curtain issue regardless of batteries, etc.

I know the spec says 1/200 is the max but I now shoot at 1/160 just to avoid the issue altogether.
