I cant afford anyones beauty dish except the small 16inch one offered by Adorama. But I'd have to buy the Adorama Flashpoint II monolights to get and use it. I've tried the translucent umbrella but they're too small and the light falloff is waaay too different than a dish.

Are there any cost effective alternatives that anyone can recommend. What about small brolly boxes like the 33inch (25inch effective) size one that Alienbees and White Lightening offer? Are there any alternatives?

You may want to look into the DIY type of project.
I plan on trying this as it gets to the top of my project list.

I doubt that that DIY idea will work. I want a dish about 22 - 30 inches. Kinda Mola in size. I think the only option is the alienbee style brolly box.

A Brolly box is totally different than a beauty dish. You won't get anywhere close to the same lighting effects from a Brolly box that you will with a Beauty dish.

Hell, not even all Beauty Dishes are created equally, try comparing a Alien bee Beauty Dish (mounted on an Alien bee) to a Hensel Beauty Dish (mounted on a Hensel) and you will see a huge difference.

Try getting a huge Wok or trash can lid and cutting a hole in the center to stick a light thru...

There is actually a lot of engineering that goes into the design, the angles, slopes, folds, etc all contribute to how the light radiates off of the Beauty Dish onto the subject.

i agree with mr. smith. if you could get the same lighting results with a brolly (or most any other modifier) why would anyone fork out for a beauty dish?

having said that, it's probably true that many people, i.e, non-phototgrapher people, won't notice a big difference between images shot with a dish vs. those shot with, say, an octodome. but we're photographers and, as such, we pay attention to details. the differences between one modifier and another--sometime big, sometimes subtle--are in those details.

I understand. Thank you. I'll just have to get that Adorama Flashpoint II strobe to get an affordable dish.
