Hi, I have a 550 flash and am thinking of getting the transmitter from Canon and maybe another flash? Anyone have any hands on with this and if so what did you think?...worth it?...

Thanks

Hi,

I've had one for the last 2 years and it certainly works as advertised. I've not had any issues and the duel speedlites give me a lot more flexibility than the single light in certain lighting situations. I guess the question is usage.. I use these when I cannot use my normal strobe kit due to A/C power or other limits at the location. They would not be as suitable for a primary studio setup IMHO.

Regards, JAK

I bought one last year with my 30D and 580EX. It definitely works well and, as I haven't had any lights before this afternoon's UPS delivery, has let me put my light a good distance from the camera. Have not tried in a multiple flash mode though.

thanks for all the replies. Part of my biz thats growing is fast executive portraits for local mags or reports. Some of the guys I shoot for only have 10 minutes for me so its in the office, shoot shoot shoot and then send the secretary the proofs later. Thinking that two maybe three 580's and the transmitter might be just the ticket. Any other alternatives?

Thanks

Dave

The possible logistics vary, of course, but you don't have to rush just because they have to rush. I know of many photographers in the same situation who show up 45 minutes to an hour ahead of time, set up an arbitrarily complex lighting scheme as desired and appropriate in a conference room or office using any spare body standing around to stand in while adjusting the lights. Once everything is set up, the executive pops in, spends 10 minutes and leaves.

Does anyone know how well the transmitter works outdoors? I was thinking about using one or two 580EX's outdoors with an umbrella/stand. Wondered if the IR can transmit with strong outdoor sunlight and/or if an umbrella would block the IR signal? I have had trouble with IR transmitters firing my monolights in larger buildings with cinder block walls.

Is there an option to use some type of pocket wizard to fire off multiple 580EXs, even if it meant using them in manual mode only? Might need an adapter or something, but I have not looked into it yet.

Also, excited to announce that the Canon 1D Mark III I ordered on June 8th is on it's way to me right now! Almost expecting the UPS guy to show up in a Santa suit tomorrow morning.
