Has anyone ever rented a lens? I want to purchase the Canon 16-35mm 2.8 lens. But can't quite justify the $1500 price. I have never rented a lens before and would like your guys experence doing so.

I rented the 16-35/2.8L . I used it for a day for a photography field trip. I liked it but I didn't like it enough to buy it. I decided to go with the 24-70/2.8L instead. I just liked the range i got with the 24-70. It all depends on what you are going to use it for. Is your style lots of wide-angle stuff? Are you going to be realllly close to your subject but wish you weren't? Doing lots of group shots?
Try it out... do your thing and see if it fits with what you do.

I was going to use it on my trip to Jamaica, 10 days. I currently have a 28-135 5.6. I use it as my primary lens. There have been a couple of times I wish I had the 16mm wide. Plus the rental change for 10 days would make a nice payment on a new one.

I rented a 70-200mm f2.8 IS canon from Calument for a week and it worked out well. I plan on doing this again with any large cost lens to give it a drive around the block.

I've rented a couple from rentglass.com, I think it's a good way to either try out something your interested in, or if it's something you don't expect to use very often. The trick is getting it when you want it. The best plan I've found is to sign up for the email alert for the lens your interested in well in advance of when you need it.

Hey Photoboy, I rent lenses all the time. In Dallas you can rent them from LightTec, Dallas Camera Exchange and Competitive Camera, just to name a few. The Canon 16-35 f2.8 rents for around $30 per day, and all the places I mentioned will give you a deal on weekly rentals. Just be VERY careful in Jamiaca as the locals are known to steal cameras and anything else of value, Feel free to contact me if you need more information about Jamaica or lens rentals.
