Hello Everyone!

I have an upcoming event to photograph (wedding), and know the reception hall will have 18ft ceilings and be candle-lit at best.

I wanted to explore options for adding "ambient" light, and thought something like Profoto's globe modifiers could work if they're set up high on lightstands.
Check out: http://www.profoto.com/products/comp...life/proglobe/

Trouble is, I don't have Profoto gear. =P

I go to Home Depot often and know they have replacement globes for indoor lighting fixtures. After measuring the collar on my Integra strobes, I was happy to go to Home Depot and find an 8" acryllic dome that fits very nicely! =) They had glass variations, but the plastic is definately safer... so long as I remember not to turn on the modeling lamp =P

Here are some quick shots of the setup. Oh, the cost of the Home Depot globe was $11. The cost for a ProGlobe online after a quick Google search was $464. =)

Thanks for looking!
~DZ

I guess I'm not quite understanding what you hope to be doing here. If this is a reception, then generally you don't do a lot of "posed" shots. So that means you'll have a hard time setting the appropriate fstop since the various people being photographed will be at varying distances from these globes.

What I usually do is to just shoot with a small on camera hot shoe flash and a modifier on it to spread the light out a little. I then use a slower shutter speed to allow the ambient light to contribute to the shot. Putting something like you show in your photo in a reception area is just asking for disaster if someone knocks one of those things over.

Cheers,
rfs

EXCELLENT! I have wanted these as well. May have to make a trip to Nirvana, er, I mean Home Depot. I think I will get the glass ones though...
