I'm interested in predicting the azimuth of the sun from specific locations on specific days of the year, and I ran across a hand-held SunPredictor. Does anyone have experience with this or a similar device?

Well I think it may be a bit of overkill, but it looks like it could be useful in some cases. The software would be relatively easy to write. I saw a program that does this online at

http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/AltAz.html

Such a program could be installed on any PDA. You don't really need a GPS built into the device, but could just enter the lat and long or just the name of the city to get similar results.

At a price of $295 for just the software, you'd need to have a serious a regular need for something like this. Or you could just occasionally go to a site like the one I point to and print on a one day sheet for the photographic ventures needs.

Cheers,
rfs

Thanks, Fred -

The USNO was my next stop! I worked for the Navy for 27 years and had a lot of interaction with them. I had gotten out my H.O. tables and sextant (I'm an avid sailor) and was going to work something out when I saw this ad - I didn't notice the price!

I want to take a picture of a sunrise and/or sunset from a bridge a few miles away from my home with railroad tracks underneath it running east-west straight to the horizon. There are tall trees on both sides of the tracks and I want the sun to be in the "notch" as it rises or sets. To do this I need to know the day it will be in the "notch" relative to the location of the bridge (azimuth of sun at rise/set). I'll let you know how it comes out.

Thanks again,
Doc

Here are a few freebies that are available for download.

http://ephemeris.com/software.html - I never used this stuff, but it could be interesting.

http://home.comcast.net/~jonsachs/ - Several FREE tools for Pocket PCs that I use on a regular basis. Sun/Moon rise and set and more, DOF Calc, and more. Newer software for Windows and more downloads here: http://dl-c.com/content/view/12/26/

Cheers
