There's the obvious joke, "point it at a beautiful model" but I won't go there.

I know you guys have covered beauty dishes in general in the past
http://www.glamour1.com/forums/tech-...auty-dish.html

But would anyone mind sharing exactly "how" as well as the "when", "where" and "why" you would use a beauty dish over something else?

I hear a lot of references about the "beauty dish effect" especially in regards to why most of the DIY solutions don't have it. Just curious exactly what that is.

Thanks!

For me, the beauty dish is an easy portrait light - at least if you point it directly at the face, and watch the nose shadow. Just one light, and there you go, good lighting. Without reflectors or anything. Put farther away (>3-5 feet), the light kinda mutates to small softbox light.

What I haven't found out (nor tried) is how to use the bd in full length shots, but there's some perfect examples of full length BD shots from JimmyD. Where is he BTW ???

I was once in a situation like you. I liked the light of the BD and everyone kept telling there's something magical about the BD of make xyz... I don't really believe this is true. But he, the hensel BD has the option of fitting grids / gels in the middle. And the option of building one myself was too much work

To "see" the characteristic of the BD, one could point it at seamless, directly from the side (!!!) so the pattern is cut by the paper. I dont' have white paper here, but maybe someone here has tried this already. After that, photoshop could show the characteristic.
