My S1 is giving me more and more fits focus-wise. Cannot get it to lock most of the time, and when it does, it isn't where I had the brackets. Manual focus is close to impossible without aids like a split image or microprism, even with my Nikkor 1.8 and 1.4 lenses. So I'm coming up with about 70% of the images out of focus.

For those who have used both for model work, how much improved is the AF accuracy? I realize this is a relative thing, and I'm going from an N60-based unit to the F80, but it's vital to me at this juncture. I'm perfectly happy with the S1's image quality and resolution, so the only reason for investing another 1K+ would be for focus. Any help appreciated.

I have an S2 and an S1. I kept the S1 as a backup body.

You've hit on one of the major differences between the S1 ad S2 -- the AF system. The S1/N60's AF system is the simplest Nikon makes. The S2/N80's system is one notch below the F100/F5 system. I still have some of the "Nikon hunt" for focus in low light -- but you really need the improved lenses and motors to fix that!

I used my 50mm f1.4 on 1.4 aperature priority doing a night shoot the other night and had 100% focus on every image. There was at least one image where I chose to focus on the wrong thing..... but that's photographer error, not a problem with the system!

Here's one from Saturday night:

B&H has the S2 in stock for $2099 and free shipping. Will order tomorrow.

I knew someone here would have used both

Took delivery of the S2 this afternoon, and the test shots so far prove you (and everyone else I've asked) out completely. A world of difference. Let alone the rest of the camera!

Now I get to play with RAW for the first time ever....
