Funny,

Those guys, Jose Villa, John Solano are in my latest digital NIkon camera advertisement.

Let's face it, digital takes more skill to shoot that film, due to it's limited dynamic range. It is more like shooting transparency film.

There is always post work even with film, so again, that is an inaccurate argument. ( I am not saying Mray didn't read it, I think it was bogus from the reportage)

If you are going to shoot JPEG you will have to concentrate a little more on the technology that you did with film. With the RAW converters now, it isn't that hard to do it all in RAW and as that technology improves AND people learn about it, it will be easier for them to work with confidence.

Even all of the above still doesn't support the original argument. People who know what they are doing will just continue to keep quietly doing it.

Jose Villla also endorses Fuji Film, full page ads for pro 400h in several mags.

On a side note, my lab just told me today they will be offering processing of "Raw" files for clients, they say it's a new trend for labs to offer this service.

Any comments?

I still haven't seen the answer to my question about where the posted article came from. Posting a long article without attribution may be copyright infringement. Is there some reason why you cannot post the source of this article? I sent a PM several days ago, but still no answer! Does anyone else know the source of this article? Thanks.
cheers,
rfs

Thanks. I went to the link and looked around the site its on. Lots of the site doesn't work, like if you click on the home button on the linked page, you get a page not found. Apparently kbcamera.com is in Washington State.
Its an odd article indeed and seems to be quite outdated (512 mb memory cards, for example). It would be possible to write a balanced article on this subject that would fairly detail both sides of the equation, but certainly this article does not qualify. An interesting read.
Cheers,
rfs

Sounds - and is - logical. NASA has both space shuttles and Titan rockets to launch junk into space, which one gets used on what mission is dedicated by mission goals and objectives.

Same with photographers - whether film or digital depends on our objective. Still prefer film for timed exposures, especially at night, whereas digital is good for most weddings and corporate work.

I have been using digital camera since May 2004 and I love it. Oh, I'll use my film camera if I have too.

How about...
TFP (your costs) use Digital.
Paid gig (their costs) use Film
?

Well, if I had to guess I'd say that KB Camera probably has a lot of old stock in film cameras and the owner, personally, is not too enamored of digital and tries to downplay it to justify a lack of business sense. Just guessing.

When I began my photo training (about 30 years ago), we were all issued 4x5 Speed Graphics to begin learning with. Lucky me, I had been previously trained by an old-time calendar photographer who gave me an excellent photographic background, so this was easy for me.

But large format was old technology even then, and there were precious few holdouts. The few commercial clients who knew the difference between large format and 35mm were willing to pay for it, ie: in those days Playboy required that level of image quality (they were shooting centerfolds on 8x10 transparency at the time). Nowadays very few of us have even seen a view camera, let alone know how to work with one.

Point is that time and technology march on, and we all have to go with it. When was the last time you bought a music album on 8 track or cassette? Might have been a good system in the day, but like it or not it just isn't being done anymore.

I just recently switched to digital because every photo processing provider I deal with uses digital processing, and it no longer makes any sense for me to let them put digital steps between my film and my prints when I could just skip all that and go straight to digits myself, thus keeping the quality chain strong and taking more control of the process myself.

So I find that I have greater creative control now. What I used to have to pay someone else to do in the lab or do myself (with a significant expense in time and equipment) I now do quickly and easily with a [relatively] cheap computer program. Honestly, I wonder why I waited so long.

I agree, the right tool for the job is always how we should approach any task, photgraphic or otherwise. In my garage I have some antique tools and I use them when the occasion deems those tools are the right ones. A competent photographer should know how to use both film and digital. But in today's "time is money" environment, it's hard to be competitive with film unless that is exactly the tool the should be used and the client can be convinced to spend the extra bucks to achieve whatever effect that only film can provide. And I have had instances where film was the best choice. But those occasions are becoming more and more uncommon as time goes on.

Just my 2 cents worth.
