Hey everyone,

My CRT is taking a dive (shakes alot and green lines going through it horizontally) and I am looking into a new monitor. My price range is about $400 or so. I have looked at Viewsonic 22" and Samsung 22". Is there anything specific I should be looking for? Any info would be great.

Thanks

JP

Hi Jean_Paul,
I use the Samsung 204B for a while now (that's the 20" version).
- contrast, brightness is excellent
- it has a lot of parameters to set individually (color temp, gamma, individual RGB adjustment), which makes it easy to adjust for image processing tasks.
- good price
There is one drawback of the samsung. Contrast and brightness change noticeably if you change your viewing angle vertically, while they are constant if you move the viewing angle horizontally. Next time buying a monitor I would especially look for more contrast stability with regard to viewing angle.

Hope this is of any help.

Well, considering your budget, I don't think it's going to make a lot of difference which one you buy. I'm not a samsung fan. I bought an NEC which was $1,000. Apple displays are higher. I think if I were buying one now, I would buy a good crt and wait until canon bring out thier lcd's. Others are going to come out too as LED becomes the the backlight choice. If you live in a larger town, you might see if you can find a sony type crt used.

My CRT also recently failed. I purchased the Samsung SyncMaster 204b after doing quite a bit of research. I think that to get anything better, the price is going to be over $1000.00. I recently received the first images (from MPIX) that I post processed using this monitor. The prints match the images on the screen perfectly (at least to my eye). Please note: I am an amateur and do not make money doing this—it is a hobby. Hope this helps.

I have both the Samsung 204B and the 225BW each connected to identical dual-core PCs and with the same Adobe software. I believe the 204B (20-inch LCD) edges out the 22-inch 225BW for work in photoshop and illustrator, with the best contrasts and color of both monitors.

Like several others, I got my LCDs when the CRTs starting popping and wheezing.

I'd recommend Eizo panels, but I suspect they are more expensive than your budget.

Eizos are made to be calibrated (especially the CG and CE ColorEdge models). A lot of panels aren't, and yield wildly wrong colours. There's supposed to be a colour-accurate Samsung, with a model number ending in BLU, but that's just one model. I have tried a few Benqs, and been disappointed in all of them. I was surprised how well some Hyundai panels calibrated.

The Apple panels vary a lot - some calibrate well, some don't (even in the same model number!) - if you get a good one, they are reputed to be quite good.
