Ok, I wanted to get a consensus of what file types you like using for your final images and why. Personally, I use the photoshop format due to the fact that I can save all of the layers, and since it's not compressed, or not very compressed, I don't have to worry about image degredation.

I save images that I work on in Photoshop in the PSD format because I've always found it to be the most stable. If saves all information as well as the layers. The other option is TIF, but I've had problems with TIFs from time to time, so I prefer PSD.

Cheers,
rfs

I too have had a few problems with .tiff's, and I also use jpg's for customer copies only due to the fact that not everybody has the full blown version of photoshop, and everybody can open a jpeg regardless of platform.

I use PSD for saving my work. For printing I recently started printing from TIFF's and have noticed a slight improvement in the final image over JPEG.

I save several versions of PSD (16 bit) as I go, and use JPEG for the images sent to models (most of whom don't know if they have Photoshop - JPEG they can always open!). Only ever made TIFFs for an MUA who was emphatic that she needed TIFFs (then rang me and asked for JPEGs when she got them)

I archive the original CR2s and XMPs and most of the PSDs. May archive the JPEGs, but only because they take up negligible space

PSDs are uncompressed - 16 bit x 3 layers x 12Mpixel = 72Mbytes. I wouldn't mind if Adobe made (lossless) compressed PSDs, unless it made them significantly slower to load (I suspect it might make them faster to load, because it would reduce disk I/O - probably dominates the CPU time to compress/decompress/).

Hm. 2 Questions I've been wanting to ask for a long time:

1. Will saving jpeg , reopening and saving again , degrade the image more and more ?
2. How can I save the HISTORY in PS ?

I do my saving in PSD by the way, jpeg only to upload or for model CD's. I also keep my RAW files. Always.

1. Yes.
2. You can't. However, if you work with layers, you can save the layers which can approximate history states. There is a trick however, that will in effect save your histories (in a sense). That is to record an action from the start to the finish of your post processing of a photo. Naturally you'd have to do that for every photo, so it would be cumbersome. But I sometimes do this if I"m trying to work out a new action.
Cheers,
rfs

Under "Preferences - General", select the "History Log" check box, then "Metadata" and "Detailed" in the drop-down. This won't save your history in the sense that you can undo or go back to a previous state, but it will save a detailed record of every edit that you make to the file, so that you can go back and see what you have done in a previous editing session if needed.

what do you normally shoot on your camera? TIFF , RAW or other i guess it is Jpeg? or does it really matter on what you are shooting and how much memory you got. i only got an 8mp camera with 1 gb card, so if i shoot on the highest quality i get like 24 (give or take) photos...But i guess ill star to save all my photos in PSD format. good stuff to know.
