I just bought a Linksys NSLU2 from CompUSA for $99. It allows you to hook up 2 USB drives and share them across the network. Additionally, it will mirror the contents of one USB drive to the other on a schedule if you configure it as such.

I bought 2 Western Digital My Book drives. 2 250 gb drives for $80 each after rebate at Circuit City. These drives will spin down after 5 minutes of inactivity so you can leave them on with no ill effects. And they look shaaaaarp stacked on top of each other!

For the hackers out there, the NSLU2 runs Linux and can be modified with custom Linux installations to do a lot more. My goal is to configure it to back up to my Amazon S3 Internet storage account. More on that as I make progress.

Just starting to get this up and running and I am really liking this. The drives auto shutdown and start up when USB cable is pulled or the NSLU2 is turned off. You can configure the NSLU2 to turn off and back on at certain times. You can also configure the NSLU2 to run disk checks on a schedule and then email you a report if it finds problems.

Also, if you convert the format to ext3 (a Linux format) you can set up user accounts to access the data on the drive. Very nice. I'll report more and I learn.

A couple questions...can you get the drives to mirror each other? When files are saved to the disks are they in standard format, or are files saved in a proprietary format?

I am interested in how it works with access over the internet, have you tried that yet?

in its default configuration they will not mirror each other as in RAID 1, but there is a schedule to back up one drive to the other and I suspect that it is done via dd which produces an identical backup. I would prefer rsync.

but, since it runs linux you can mod it to run RAID.

Biggest reason I want to mod mine is because of this: http://www.gilesthomas.com/?p=14 s3sync will make a copy of data to the Amazon S3 service.

As for remote file access, there is a web based file browser built into it that you can download files with.
