I just purchased an SB-800 and I'm wondering what my first step with it should be.

I'm using a d50, and this is my first flash.

Where do I start ?

I'm planning on shooting one of my "go to" models with it this week just to experiment and get some experience with it.

I looked at the manual that it came with, and I bought a separate book for it at B&N but I feel like a kid who just stepped into the big bad woods.

Any suggestions or guidance from the more experienced members would be appreciated.

Ok, you're going to love this flash, I got mine back in September, and I'm using a Nikon F4s. Yes, film, but it still performs excellently. I've shot a wedding, and outdoor photo shoots with it. But to your question as far as how to use it. Myself, I use the TTL-BL mode for most of my shooting, rarely ever going to manual. For verticals, close ups, plus a few other apps, use the diffusion dome that comes with it. You made a great choice, and especially since you're digital, play around with it. Enjoy my friend.

Isaiah

There's an entire website devoted to using manufacturer's strobes off-camera. Check out: http://www.strobist.blogspot.com/

First step? Insert batteries!!

Seriously though, I have one and I love it. I'll have to get some photos posted of a model I worked with and I used the SB-800 exclusively. I shot every shot with it mounted on the camera and haven't played with off-camera triggering yet but that's another step I want to try at some point. I'm sure you'll be very pleased with it.

Good day!
