I use a Nikon D50 and I am thinking of adding a flash to my equpiment. I'm thinking of either the SB-600 or the SB-800 I'm leaning towards the 800 though. Any suggestions ? Would you recommend a flash other than Nikon? I'm hoping to stay in this price range.

Also I found that adorama.com offers factory refurbished models of the 800 for approximately half the price of a new one. Any opinions on that ?

My preference is "it's better to have the power and not need it than to need it and not have it". ..so I would opt for the 800. I've tried other brands and the Nikon flashes are so tightly integrated with the CLS, the others can't produce as good a result in my opinion. I have some 800's and they work exceptionally well.

I have to agree, personally I have the 600 and it's an excellent flash. If I had it to do over again I would go to the 800.

My thoughts exactly. the extra power comes in handy with high ceilings and large areas.

I think you've all sold me on the 800

Now, should I go with a new one or the remanufactured version for half the price ?

Man, I'm awful at those decisions. I'm a big fan of buying the best I can afford once which keeps me away from remanufactured. But, I've read about people buying them - just don't know if they still have the same life expectancy. I guess the answer is, buy what you can afford and are comfortable with. Great big help, aren't I?

I can't speak for Nikon products, but in general I've had great success with refurbished products. I've found that most everthing I have bought refurbished was a new product with a factory defect. They are basicly sent back and rebuilt by hand to correct the problem. I've bought refurbished camera's, TV's, and computer monitors and never had one problem.

I'm also a Canon shooter, but the answer to the question is the same. I have the 430EX and am finding those times I'd like to have the 580 in my bag. Guess I'll be trading up (and losing yet more money) in the very near future. And I am willing to buy refurbs if they are done by the manufacturer. I've run into the very rare refurb done in some field repair shop and packaged back up as refurbished instead of labelled as repaired.

Cheers!

Isn't canon Japanese for "inferior image quality" ?
