As a photographer who uses film, ambient metering and manual flash, let me ask you

How reliant are you on TTL, D-TTL or I-TTL flash? What benefits do you think that it has over manual flash photography?

Not very... I seldom use the on-camera flash or a dedicated flash tied to the camera, but when the odd situation comes up that a quick shot with flash is required, it beats the heck out of calculating a GN and estimating the distance... but that's just my opinion.

For me, since I don't have a studio and use my on camera flash as my light source, I heavily rely on the TTL feature for the simple reason that I want to concentrate on the composition of the image with little else to worry about. On some occasions though, I do go manual, but the vast majority of the time, I use the TTL.

TTL flash systems are great for shoots where you dont want to think about the lighting or cant control it, such as when shooting celebrities or other subjects you cant direct the lighting over.

Overall I read that thyristor is more accurate. But then again, it's difficult to control the direction of the meter on the thyristor unit, and off camera systems are rarely possible.

if i was shooting with my f100 i used ttl.... but that mostly because not of my photo teachers ever spent enough time on manual flash for me to really under stand it....the big stuff ( dynalite, profoto ect ) is no big deal...but you can't really meter a sunpak 555 outdoors... and i have had crappy luck with my d100 and my sigma dttl flash ( hey i can't afford a real dttl flash ) course my RZ don't have ttl...
