Good Day to everybody. What a fantastic community this is.

I shoot glamour and more with great colour negative and reversal film emulsions in all formats and I have a question to those with real world experience in advertising.

Walking through the streets today (and a shopping district) I noticed just how large many head shots for makeup advertisements were. I mean very big, over a metre in width and just shots of the face. I also noticed watch and perfume advertisements with head and shoulder shots that were also approaching this size, all the way down to A2.

I thought to myself - what format are these fantastically detailed shots taken with?

eg think large perfume ads like Boss, Chanel, watch ad for Tag Heuer with Brad Pitt's and Uma Thurman's portrait, Lancome and other cosmetic ads that are just !huge! headshots printed and illuminated on display.

Some of these ads are over 1 or 2 years old. I do wonder whether it is possible that they were done on a sub-8MP DSLR with a great sensor.

Keep in mind the rule about viewing distance.

Also, it is quite possible to make exceptional blowups with lower res images that look great if using the right software to upres them. I remember attending an Ed Pierce seminar several years ago where he had a bunch of prints in the 24 x 36 range and a number even larger. He had mixed them all together around the display area. Some were shot with a 3 mega pixel camera, and some with film, and some with a 22 mega pixel camera (medium format). They were all printed on an Epson Inkjet printer. All of the photos were stunning and no one was able to really tell which camera was used for any of the shots.

Just my random thoughts on the issue.

Cheers,
rfs

While it is possible to up-res, the clients you mention typically demand the best image quality that you can muster. Medium-format digital backs are really taking over here, due to 16-bit image files, large (48mm x 36mm) sensors and as many as 39 million pixels. Depending on the subject you will also find medium and large format view cameras with scanning backs, multi-shot backs, or film (chromes) that are then drum-scanned.
