How do I embed copyright information within an image using Photoshop 7 so when
a purchased image is "illegally copied" at Wal Mart or on a home printer the copyright information appears on the "illegal" print. Thanks, BH

Here is a link to Digimarc

http://www.digimarc.com/mypicturemarc/default.asp

Obviously the copyright info is not going to be invisible on the image when viewed and then suddenly magically appear when printed. It is possible technologically to do this, but only if the printer software knows about the hidden mark and can render it during printing. To my knowledge none of the home printers have such software in them and neither do commercial printers at Walmart, etc. If the current digital rights paranoia continues, however, I assume we'll see stuff like that in home printers at some point. Of course, someone else will sell a cheap software work around, or have a filter in PS that removes the invisible watermark.

Your best bet is to just apply a watermark of some sort. Of course that makes the print less desirable to the client. But you can charge a premium to provide prints without the watermark. And a well done visible watermark can be quite unobtrusive, but at the same time very difficult to remove.

Cheers,
rfs

I simply apply the text, (I use an action in bridge to apply it to many images at once) ALT+0169 makes the copyrightsymbol on windows systems, then my name and website if desired. My action merges layers. I do this whilst in the working file, PSD or TIFF, not on jpgs, never save jpgs more than once.
