Here's a little experiment I'd like to run past those of you who are interested. Which color to you prefer for skin tones? Warmer suntans, or more "natural" magenta like skin tones. Here's an example:

So which do you like best, and why? And does the usage also play a part? Does a suntan work better with smiles, and the more "natural" look with non-smiles?

By the way, to fully realize how two photos side by side can change your perception, try covering each photo, one at a time and just evaluate each photo without seeing the other. Do your perceptions change?

cheers,
rfs

I prefer the natural tone of the two. With regard to smile or non-smile, I guess I'm indifferent. My perception of the "suntan" version is that it's not really a tanning tone. I perceive it as a yellowish cast (similar to jaundice) rather than a warming. I think a change in the color balance would help it.

In this case, I also like number two.

IMHO, I think with the white background the natural works best. I agree with the earlier comment about being too yellowish however, If the setting were outdoors it's possible the warmer tone would work much better.

I think warmer tones are often associated with upbeatness and happiness; cooler ones with more subdued or sadness. Noth photos are nice, but I prefer #1. If the looks swapped the photos would be still be nice, but a I'd still prefer the warmness with a smiling face than the other way around.

A look through any magazine that prominently features models--either in fashion ads or as part of the rag's content--shows that preferences in skin tones are all over the map and often are subject-driven or have to do with the "feeling" the images are trying to convey. These preferences aren't limited to warm tones or cool tones, e.g., i see lots of images with muted tones or with sepia-like tones. For glamour, i prefer to produce warmer, golden-hour-like tones as they seem sexier. In your examples, the wamer image, IMO, is too much to the "yellow" side rather than to an amber or slightly orangey hue.
