Hey guys,

Some friends from school need to invest in a good digital SLR. These cameras will be getting a lot of use throughout two years of school. They're looking at something in the $1000 - $2000 range. Remember, they're photo students, so entry-level stuff won't do (but way high-end is a little too pricey). No brand is off limits here. Oh, and also, if you know of any kits that include a decent lens, that'd be great too.

Ready?....... Go!

Thanks!

Sam

Hey Sam,
I have a recommendation for you, the Nikon D70. Out here in Fresno, CA, it's going for $799 for just the body, and $999 for a kit with a lense, but I forget what lense it is, but it is a Nikkor lense, so it ain't too shabby. And this is from an authorized Nikon dealer, and a US warranty, so, just thought I'd give that info.

"Invest" is the wrong word to use for a DSLR. Technology changes so fast that whatever they buy today will seem ancient/obsolete by the time they graduate. You are basically investing in the lens system. I'd recommend spending the money on good glass and getting a body with whatever is left. There's nothing wrong with "entry" level DSLRs like the D50, RebelXT, and the like. They've got full manual control, which is all you need for any school. I know plenty of students creating excellent imagery with those cameras.

If I were going to spend $1000 on a camera and lens, I'd look at a D50, D70 or one of the Rebel flavors with a kit lens (18-55mm or similar). In the $2000 range, I'd probably look at the same bodies, but look at a few prime lenses, a constant-aperture zoom, or some combination. It would depend on what I was looking to concentrate on, school-wise.

Hey guys, sorry it took so long to reply...

I passed on all the advice to my friends from school, and now I'm just waiting to hear what they get. I know one of them was looking at the Canons, and she was looking at the Rebel XT and the 30D, I think.

Chip, I'm not sure if she went with an entry-level body and a great lens, or a mid-range body and a so-so lens, but I made sure to pass on the advice to her.

Isaiah, sorry man, looks like she's going Canon. I tried to steer her towards a Nikon, but to no avail. (Just playin' around, Canon people!!! Which, I know, is pretty much everybody here. )

Thanks for the recommendations and advice you guys, it's much appreciated!

Sam

Don't worry about it Sam, I have nothing against Canon, it's just that I like what Nikon has to offer better. Canon makes an excellent camera and lenses. In fact, the lab that I use is an authorized Canon dealer, and even they agree that Nikon makes an excellent camera and lenses. Either way, it sounds like she'll get a good camera, and I have to agree with Chip on this one, invest is the wrong term, technology does change all the time.

I recomend the 30d. I have used it since it came out and find it has way more to offer than a rebel, d50 or d70. Get the venerable 28-105 usm I lense for it. Much better I think than the new taiwan made one. I even use it for astrophotography and it is steps above the others for continual shooting. ( I do racing photos)

www.keh.com

Great prices, like new bodies with discounted prices and 60 day warranties/exchanges....I get nothing from this by posting it here....just a place that has treated me well and helped bulk up my inventory without spending premium dollar.

Hey everybody, sorry it's taken so long to reply (school's kickin' my butt), but I just wanted to say thanks for all the replies. I know one friend ended up getting a 30D. The other one hasn't chosen a camera yet, but I'll be sure she gets all the advice from everyone here.

Thanks again!

Sam
