any idea what the light source of this might be:

http://www.davidbyun.com/popup.php?p...which=beauty_m

the light is so bright and soft and then it falls off to leave nice deep shadows.

im interested in trying some shooting with a similair light.

My guess would be a floodlight or a strobe with a medium to large reflector. Take your strobe outside and play in the backyard some night (assuming you can get your strobe off the camera) and you should be able to come pretty close with minimal equipment.

thanks wayne. where do you see the reflector coming in to play. it looks to
me like a big source from the top and thats it. or do you mean the strobe
is coming through a diffuser ?

A pinpoint light source will have very hard edged shadows... the shadows in this shot are diffuse.. not very hard edged at all, thus I would imagine the light source would be a bit broader than a single light... I believe I could reproduce that look with my soft box (30"x40") with the diffusion panels taken out.
