I've heard both good things about Sigma lenses, and bad things about putting a Sigma lens on a Canon body. So what's the real story?
Are Sigma lenses any good?
And are the stories about Sigma lenses causing the camera to throw error codes true?
I have a Rebel XT, and I am looking at telephoto zoom lenses.

I use Sigma's 70-200 2.8ap on my 20d. So far I have been very happy with it. Very sharp and focus fast. The only drawbacks that I can find are that is does sometimes have trouble focusing in low light and it is a heavy lens.

I'm also reading things about Tamron as well.
I'm basically looking for decent lenses that won't break the bank.

I have 3 Sigma lenses, They hunt alot more in low light than the Canons, but otherwise are great lenses

Oh, no, you mustn't use Sigma lenses - your camera will explode!

Just kidding - Sigma lenses work fine, I have a Sigma 100-300 f4 which is useful as a (relatively) cheap long lens. I only use it in bright sunshine, so I can't comment about low-light behaviour.

I use two Sigma lens for about 2/3 rds of my work. Sigma 70-200 f2.8 and Sigma 18-125 F3.5-f6.3. Both work like champs. I've not had a problem with low light focusing with either of mine. But I did use the Canon 70-200 F2.8 L lens once and it did seem to seek quite a bit in low light. Whatever you buy, be sure to test it thoroughly after you get it to be sure its right on in focus, and speed, etc. Many lens of all brands can be basically bad out of the box, so make sure you do your testing during the exchange period. Don't buy from anyone unless you do have at least a 30 day exchange window.

Here are a few photos with the lens above:

Kennedy at the Virgin Islands shot with the Sigma 70-200 F2.8

Haley with the Sigma 18-125.

About half the photos in my portfolio are shot with the above two lens.

Cheers,
rfs

I think part of what you are seeing is information on older Sigma lenses. Some of them had a problem "talking to" the newer Canon bodies and they had to replace the chip in the lens. The newer lensed don't have that problem.

I have a Sigma 70-300mm that does a good job and is pretty darn sharp. I use it alot for close range hummingbird shots. I have a Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 that I really like for studio work. Both have been used on a 10D and a 20D.

Thank you all for all of the great information on the lenses.

That is indeed great news to hear.
I noticed that most everybody here has commented on the Sigma lenses. Are these better than the other one, the Tamron?

This is definitely some good advice that I will heed well.

I had bought a used Tamron SP 24-135 last year, and now it hardly ever leaves my 20D body.
Never have had an error (knock on wood), and works great from full wide to full zoom.

I've been using the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 and I love it. As far as how good they are is subjective to who you talk to. I was talking to one of the sales people at Calumet and he stated that Tamron is the best of the three with sigma next and tokina last, but that is his thoughts? I'm looking hard at the sigma 30mm f1.4 as my next len's.
