I think it depends on what you will be shooting. Low light ? I have seen great work done with both lens. If it was me I would go with the L glass just because it is faster. But you may not need a faster lens.

I was just headed over to FM to post my 85 1.8 for sale ad. Lens, both caps, hood. Lightly used and works perfectly. 285 + 10 for Next Day FEDEX. USPS Money Order. I've got references, if you'd like. Pics are at:

Well the question is do you shoot handheld in low light a lot, or do you shoot in "really" really low light?

And is it worth the $1000 plus price difference get to the "really" stage?

Cheers,
Roger

i use the 85mm 1.8 regularly and have no complaints....either from myself or my clients. I've never shot with the 1.2 L so I can't speak about it from any experience. if i'm gonna plunk down for L glass in a medim telephoto (prime) it would be the 135 L.

Here's one shot a few weeks ago with the 85 1.8

I've owned the 1.8, 1.2 and the 1.2 II. If your a manual focus kinda guy I have nothing but praise for both the 1.2 and the 1.2 II. If you depend on autofocus the speed of the 1.2 leaves a little to be desired the 1.2 II is definately better but overal speed wise the 1.8 is the best in my opinion. But being able to shoot at 1.2 rocks thats for sure.

I have the 85mm 1.2 version I and find it very sexy...
it works very well in the Studio as focusing speed is typicall not a probelm, for out side action I have a 70-200L f2.8 IS or my newly aquired 500mm f4 IS...
always go for the "L"

This was shot with my 85mm and while it may not look awesome here as a 600x400 jpg.. the tif from the RAW original is awesome....

I personally have never seen a need for shooting anything below 1.8 to justify the extra expense. If you plan on shooting in conditions that will favor the faster 85 and have the funds then go for it, otherwise you will be pretty darn happy with the 85 1.8.
