I know the importance of backing up but my main drive crashed and cannot be found by the bios. (software will not work). Can anyone refer me to a data rtrieval place? Damn this hurts!

I've sent a drive here to be restored before, not for my own drive but for the company I work for.

They recovered all the data, took about 8-10 days. It isn't going to be cheap though!

Hey JT,
here's a roundabout way to try data recovery, plus it'll also give you a backup drive. Purchase an external HD, I got a 100 GB for about 130.00, reinstall you OS, windows or OSX, whichever it may be onto the new external HD, and see if you after you reinstall the OS, if it'll recognize your normal HD that way. Hope this helps.

I did a similar trick, only I installed a new hard drive in the case, installed Windows xp, then connected my old hard drive as a slave (the book in the new Maxtor drive showed me how). Then I went to Start>my computer>(letter for slave drive) and it recognized it and I was able to retrieve all of my pictures and move them over to the new drive. It took three days for this country boy to figure it out, but I "Got-r-done". Arkie

The problem with putting the "dead" drive in as a slave is that the machine won't recognize it even then. From the description, it sounds like the electronics on the drive (the circuit board that's on top) have gone bad. The drive itself is probably still good as well as all of the data on it. The way we've fixed these types of problems (computers is my profession) is to get a working drive of the same model and swap out the circuit board from it to the bad drive. At that point, assuming the board was the problem, you'll have a working drive again with all your data intact.

Thanks for your replys....not sure what the link is for JT?
Drive is not found in bios, so it must be dead.
It spins, but doesn't sound right.
Not sure it is electrical, if I can find a drive like it, maybe I will try.
I think it will need data recovery...are they all expensive?
