Hi everyone, I have been into photography for several years, but I am fairly new to glamour photography. Thanks to a very understanding and helpful wife, I have a model willing to let me try new tips, techniques and poses, most of which I have learned from all of the helpful glamour1 members. I would sincerely like to thank all of you for your willingness to share tips and techniques, especially with us new guys. I have spent alot of time with my wife in front of the lens trying to hone my techniques and model communication, and I will be attending Rolando's Atlanta workshop in October. Hopefully after that I will feel confident enough to take the next step and start working with models besides my terrific wife. Unfortunately, she is too shy to let me post her picture here or anywhere.
I recently purchased my first digital camera, a Canon EOS 30D which I absolutely love. I am now looking to purchase a really good but versatile lens, if possible, to use primarily for glamour photography including headshots, fashion, nude, indoors and out. I am leaning towards the Canon L series, but I'm not opposed to other suggestions. I understand this is probably asking too much, and will more than likely require more than one lens. I just thought I'd throw it out and see if any of you using a Canon 30D or other 1.6x model could tell me what your favorite and most versatile high end lens for glamour photography is. Or what you feel the ideal first purchase would be.
I apologize for the long post, and if any of you made it this far, Thank You for your time. I look forward to hearing your suggestions and hopefully meeting some of you in Atlanta in October.

With a full frame camera, I would probably want to use a 70-200mm zoom or a 135mm fixed focal length, possibly a 200mm fixed focal length. With a 1.6 mutiplication factor on my 10D, I find that the 70-200mm is too long for indoor work and I usually use a 28-80mm zoom. I also have a 50mm f1.8 cheapie Canon lens that is effectively an 80mm. I prefer lenses that are in the effective range of 70-200mm. For the 10D, that would be 44-125mm actual focal length. A 35-135mm zoom would probably work well and an 85mm prime would be a good choice. Good lenses in this range will not be cheap.

The Canon 85mm f1.8 is cheap, and focuses very fast. Used in on my last two shoots, and was quite impressed with the results.

A friend of mine, shooting on a 30D, is very much in love with her 135mm f2L. Having looked at some of the results, I can't blame her. It's a little bit long on the crop body, but worth it.

The 50mm f1.4 is cheap (although rather more than the 1.8), and allows really shallow depth of field.

For a zoom I'd suggest either the 24-70mm f2.8L (heavy, but a classic lens) or the 24-105mm f4L IS (a little lighter, has IS, but doesn't allow quite as shallow depth of field).

Don't overlook the macro lenses, either - they can take extremely sharp portraits. On the 30D the EF-S 60mm is effectively 96mm. I like the 100mm f2.8 Macro on a full-frame.

I do 90% of my glamour work with 2 lens on my 20D. I use the Sigma 70-200 2.8 for portrait and head and shoulders or even full length if I can get back far enough. For tighter spots I use the Sigma 18-125 3.5-5.6. Both lens give me nice sharp results. The Sigma 70-200 is rated by many reviewers at about equal to the equivalent L lens at 50% less in price. Check out my portfolio on G1 as about 3/4ths of he shots are with these two lens.
Cheers,
rfs

Thanks for your input. Lots of great suggestions. I guess that's what makes it such a difficult decision - too many choices. RFS, I have to admit that I have been an admirer of your portfolio for a while now. I absolutely love the image of Malloy with the dark background in the Virgin Islands. Thanks again guys.

congrats on the recent pick up of the 30d... that is indeed a nice camera. i think the 24-70 f2.8L is a very nice and versitile lens.

like others mentioned, dependinging on you available space when shooting the 70-200 may be an option as well but 70mm on the short end coupled with a 1.6x crop factor can pose problems for some...

Thanks for your comments. The Sigma 70-200 F2.8 was used for the shot. It is a great lens that is ultra sharp and quite fast.
Cheers,
