Hi!

I need some tips for shooting close-up make-up pix. I have not tried this before and am not sure about the proper lighting and equipment.

To be specific, I need to shoot images of just eyes, lips , etc to empahasize the lashes, or glossy lips, I think you get the idea.

Do you shoot these like other macro stuff?

Please , anyone who has done this successfully please share!

Here's one we did of Soshanna last year.

1-main light (Alien Bee 1600) at 1 O'clock, camera right and very close.
1-gold reflector to camera left
1-AB 800 for a little light on the background

Shot with a Canon 1Dsmk2, ISO100, f11, 1/200 and a Canon EF24-70f2.8/L

This next image of Cynthia was shot 2 weeks ago, strangely enough, with a very similar lighting setup (with a purple gel on a black background.) My daughter Kortney did the makeup with an airbrush.

Similar camera settings but used the Canon EF 100mm f2.8 Macro USM...

Awesome photos and the airbrushing. Airbrushed through a lace template?

Yes, you are correct... through a lace template that Kortney created. Thank you very much for the compliment!

Best regards,

Just light these like you normally would and make sure the application of make-up is perfect. As far as exposure goes, once your magnification ratio gets larger than 1:8 you have to start opening up your aperture to compensate for lens extension:

1:8 open up 1/4 stop.
1:4 open up 1/2 stop.
1:2 open up 1 stop.
1:1.5 open up 1.5 stops
1:1 open up 2 stops.

I'd also recommend the use of a tripod because focus is very critical and you have very little depth of field.

Excuse the odd size crop, but these are Angela Hendrickson's eyes. I was just amazed with their color.

Shot with a 36x48 Photoflex Multi-Dome with grid on a Norman ML600R. No additional reflectors.

Nikon D200, Nikkor 180mm f/2.8D ED AF
ISO 100, f/6.3, 1/250

That's a very cool makeup technique and nicely executed. Hat tip to Kortney! Stirs the imagination in terms of the almost unlimited range of items that could be used as a template.
