I'm thinking about purchasing a Nikon D200 with the 18-200 lens and also a Quantum T5D flash. This setup would be used for weddings and event type photos. Would I be better served using the SB800 instead of the Quantum? Your thoughts and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jean

The SB-800 is a wonderful unit ( could you guess I love mine?) and it highly integrated in the the TTL metering system. Don't know about the Quantum - but if it's not set up to use the D200's metering, you might consider whether that would be a big difference or not.

Thanks Wayne. I have a SB8oo for my D70 and like it. Maybe I just need to perhaps go ahead and purchase another SB800 instead. It certainly is cheaper, money wise, than the Quantum.

Thanks.

Use the 800 on camera for fill and the Quantum on a stand as main. Fire both flashes in auto. A lot of wedding guys do it like that.

I loved my Quantum T2s for medium format, but have gone with SB800s with a D70. Reportedly the T2 can be upgraded to T2D, and per Quantum is "almost like the T5D...", but I heard users complain. THe SB-800 is very integrated into Nikon's digital exposure system. You will likely still want the Quantum Turbo battery for faster recycling and not having your AAs die. AAs are still needed to power the "logic ciurcutry", but last a long time when you remember to turn on the Turbo... ;-)

Ronmark -

That's very interesting. I have several manual (Dumb) flash units off camera and use an RF (No flash) head on my D70 to trigger them. I just got an SB-800, and intend to get one or two more SB-600s or SB-800s for a multiple flash setup using the Nikon CLS wireless system. You're saying that, in the meantime, I can set the SB-800 to auto and use it as a fill and as the trigger for the other flashes?
