I use I.E to surf, but Netscape Composer to edit/create HTML pages.

When viewing ANY local (ie on my harddrive) HTML pages with I.E., images do not display and have 'red x's'. Everything else on page is correct.

Even when I simply paste a page image's URL into address bar, and I KNOW it's the right location, (displays in Netscape fine), and hit 'refresh', it STILL displays a 'red x' in I.E.

It does this with both self-created pages, and saved Webpages. No images will display.

BUT: When I upload my pages to web, all of a sudden all images display properly in I.E., no problem if it's a 'live online webpage'.

I've changed/reset every possible option I can find in I.E. 'preferences', still no luck. At some point in the past it didn't behave this way.

Running I.E. ver. 5.50

WTF is the problem here? I'd like to be able to preview my work in I.E. prior to uploading, not just Netscape.

If you haven't done it the first thing I'd do is delete all of your "Temporary Internet Files".

If that doesen't do it, load one of your local pages in IE, right click on one of your "red x" images, click on properties and see if the path to the image is really where the image really is.

If that doesn't do it, Upgrade to IE 6 and see if that doesn't cure it.

Sounds like you are linking to images that are already uploaded or the program you use writes some relative code pointing to your images on your HDD. I'm sure Hackman will chime in on this one with more information that can help you.

"If you haven't done it the first thing I'd do is delete all of your "Temporary Internet Files"."

Done, not it/

"If that doesen't do it, load one of your local pages in IE, right click on one of your "red x" images, click on properties and see if the path to the image is really where the image really is."

Path correct, not it.

"If that doesn't do it, Upgrade to IE 6 and see if that doesn't cure it."

Don't want to do that. Bug in IE6 can corrupt Windows Explorer shared shdoc401.dll - hassle fix! I computer tech parttime and have had two clients who upgraded to IE 6 and had the 'explorer.shell' corrupted.

"Sounds like you are linking to images that are already uploaded"

Nope, not it.

"or the program you use writes some relative code pointing to your images on your HDD."

Nope. It's more of a file extension/app association problem. Loading image path in IE brwoser window and hitting 'go' or 'refresh' calls my graphics editor. IE refuses to display ANY jpg file type. But ONLY jpgs locally, jpgs on www display no problem. Baffling!

Have gone into 'folder options' and 'file type' and edited file ext jpg 'open' function every which way to call IE.exe, and says it is, but won't, calls PhotoImpact instead. Netscape behaes just fine.

Try uninstalling photo impact..then setting the file assoc. to IE....then reinstall photo impact and uncheck the set all file type when it is installing...you know as well as i do some of the photo editing stuff plays with the registry files and can override normal settings....

just an idea

That did it... kinda.

I went into the associate preferences in PhotoImpact, unchecked 'jpg', closed, rebooted, then opened up an html with jpg's, and VOILA, IE now displays jpgs correctly.

Downside is that opening a jpg from Explorer now calls up IE, instead of PhotoImpact like I'd prefer.

Of course I can just open any jpg from inside PhotoImpact, but still, this isn't an ideal fix.

BUT, I can now check my pages from both browsers before uploading. And I can just reassociate jpgs with PhotoImpact if working intensively there, toggle back and forth w/associations.

Tanx Tude!

Rather than opening photo impact first, you can right click on your jpeg file and select "open with" and choose photoimpact. I find this to be easier for me when I do stuff with photoshop.

I am sure you know about the "open with" I did not mean to talk to you like you are in 3rd grade, but I get these questions from EVERYBODY that I know, and "Open With" can be a real mystery, like a Penn and Teller magic show.

Kurt, what is the EXACT url path to a couple of JPG that won't load? They MUST be relative paths and not absolute paths otherwise IE won't load the jpgs or gifs.

So you should have paths like
<img src='images/title.jpg'>

and not
<img src='/images/title.jpg'>
(notice the blackslash before the images)
