I am wanting to know how most of you catalog your images and what software you are using to do so.
Thanks

I use Extensis Portfolio. I've been using it for over 10 years. I am slowly switching it over to a Filemaker Pro relational database.

I use IdImager..

http://www.idimager.com

a feature rich software developed by one man who works tirelessly at improving it. They have a forum for support. I was not familiar with the software and went through a beta cycle of downloads and was not totally happy---images missing from the catalog because I handled them in Windows outside of the cataloging software and maybe? other reasons. Since then, I have stuck with downloading only the official releases and things are much better. There was a bit of a learning curve (I had never worked with a D.A.M. app before). Also, it is just a tad more unstable than I would like, probably due to the continuing development cycle the software goes through.

Thanks for the information. I have lots of pictures and can never find the ones I am looking for. How do most photographers catalog them? By date, occassion etc.

Extensis Portfolio here as well. As a matter of fact, cataloged my discs just this past weekend ... lol It does an okay job of it but there are others out there just as good.

I'm sort of against programs doing things for me. So, I organize a directory tree structure labeled in this fashion:

2006 (03) March 23rd - Downtown shoot with Model Stacy

So, I can search by year, then month [which are in order because of the (03)], then day if it matters and then a description. I have done this for about 5 years and it hasn't failed me yet. *shrugs* I have tried the Adobe program and one other and they were overly comlicated just to organize images for me.

here is a forum that deals with the answer to the question; he also wrote a book on it which is for sale somewhere at the same site or at your local bookstore or Amazon.

http://thedambook.com/smf/index.php?...7ea9d726d6391&

I upload into a dated folder structure, then I rank and categorized the images...
example:

people/family/Emily
people/friends/Josh Smith
etc.

with many other categories

I have always used Extensis Portfolio and may continue to for archived off line data. I thought of making a Filemaker Pro database and am interested that someone else is doing it. I have recently added Aperture to my workflow and, if I keep it there (and I think I will) that will be my main DAM tool - I think. This is still all very fluid at the moment. The downside with Aperture is keeping it all in one volume, although there are some work arounds. The up side is it gives you a relational database...

and O'Reilly has an excert from the DAM book which discusses keywords:
