Took a run through the Rosco Gel inventory today...my head is still spinning. Anyone care to share what they consider to be the "essential gels"? I knew that I wanted a good bastard amber, but then I found about 106 of them!

(Okay, that's a bit of an overstatement...)

Roscolux #02: Bastard Amber

i think they also make it in Light Bastard Amber and maybe some others.

You might also get some CTO and CTB. i'd go with "half" versions. you can always double it up for more intense color.

I have the Rosco Color Effects Kit, which gives you a variety of 10 different 10"x12" filters, including #2 bastard amber. You can also get it in 20x24. Actually I have two sets, so I can light a background from both sides. I find I use bastard amber, red, and blue the most often.

After the Amber that Jimmy mentioned, I would get an ND gel.

Can you describe the effect that it gives? You point it on the model, the background or al of them?

Thanks

bastard amber nicely warms the models skin tones. yu would use it on the model, not the BG. i like to warm most models with a small piece of bastard amber on my beauty dish. be careful about using it on very fair-skinned models, like red-heads with very white skin, as the effect might be more akin to a sunburn or one of those bad, fake, lotion suntans.

For the red head pale models I sometimes use the Pale Amber Gold # 009 or the Apricot # 147

For other models depending on effect i want I will use the baster Amber #02
1/4 CTO #3409, 1/2 CTO #3408

I use all on lights directed at the Models. Some are used on hair lights also.

I use the ND a lot on my WL 5000, as it only has two power settings.

I also have a small piece of of the amber that's cut to fit my Stofen. Gives sort of a late afternoon setting sun look.
