ok I have never purchased a computer online before. I either built it myself or walked into office depot and said give me that one.

But after seeing an add in the Dell small biz brochure at the office today I figured I would visit the website and buy me a puter.

I basically stripped down one of their systems to meet my needs, and got a box right at $400, shipping and tax included. I filled out thier finanicing options, and within two minutes I was approved. But at 27.99%!!!!!!!

has anyone told Dell that the market prime is somewhere around 4% or 5%?

I would have no intentions of stretching my payments over the 46 month period, more like two or three months, but 28% interest is completely obsurd!

Slightly off-topic, but had to comment.

The place where I pay my cell-phone bill (at the last minute when I've forgotten to mail it, to avoid the absurd late fees) is also a loan-shark operation, ya know, the "advance on paycheck/car title loan" scam?

Well, the state legislature tried to outlaw/modify how these places operate in New Mexico (unsuccessfully), because they give out "micro-loans" between $100 and $499, at a rate of 50% interest (or MORE in the smaller villages here) on the principal loaned - - - - PER WEEK.

And this is compound interest! You borrow $100 this Friday, you gotta pay back $150 by next Friday, if you don't, it's $225 by the Friday after that.

PLUS a $50 late fee (per week) added on top.

I'm sure some more mathematically literate person can figure out what that is yearly.

Seems (I heard) some legislator here has a family member who owns a string of these things, which is why the measure regulating them was defeated.

Apparently loans under $500 fall outside state banking regulations.

Amazing huh?

Clint, I know the feeling. I bought an I8000 laptop for $2800 back in 2001. I ended up with 23.99%! I'm never financing anything from Dell again. A sales rep told me their lowest interest rate is 13.00%. If I had known that when I bought it, I would've went to my bank and got a better loan. Maybe it's different if you call business sales?

....you shoulda known they were gonna get some money somewhere, I guess. Business is about profits, even if the profits are in the financing and not the goods.

Of course, you have other options.

"The worth of a thing is what that thing will bring."

If you want the computer, and you're willing to pay their rate, then for you, it's a good deal. If you aren't, then it isn't. They are not to blame for charging what the market will bear.

Lots of other resellers out there with their own credit deals... the one that does Apple's only charges 9.9%, last time I helped somebody buy one.
