Olli, I just ordered that Bogen boom from B&H and should have it by Friday. (Thanks for recommending it.) It comes with a counter-weight, but no weight for the base of the stand. What do you use for that and why do you feel it's needed? Just being extra safe? (Not a bad thing.)

What's the heaviest lighting equipment you put on that boom?

Stability of the stand without extra weight is pretty good. With the boom aligned with a leg it's great, but if the boom is midway between legs it can be a little tipsey. Thats why I hang a 25# barbell weight on the base of the wheeled stand.
I also hang a 10# barbell weight from the end of the boom, the manufacturers counterweight didn't come with my boom.
I have a powerpack (dyna-lite, 6#) mounted on the wheeled base on a small piece of plywood. This makes the stand easier to roll around.
I keep a dyna-lite 2040 head (2.4#) on the boom, and attach the usual modifiers; grid, snoot, umbrella, soft box. I regularly use a 14x48 Larson softbox on it.
This boom works so great, It's hard to imagine working without it.

that's what sand bags are for. (or shot bags which are more expensive)
