(if I could get my hands on a D200!)

Any thoughts on the best choice ? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Jim,

D200's are becoming more available and the camera is fantastic. Had mine a couple of months now and it's complex and challenging but it gives you all the flexibility you will probably need.

Here's a couple of websites if you haven't seen them.

Another vote for the D200. I got mine on release day and recently sold my trusty D70. I shoot RAW 99% of the time and the images are outstanding (or at least the best I can do ).
Maybe ask JT about the Fuji, but I'm sold on the D200 with pro glass.

I recently went from a D70 to a S3 and I have to confess I was looking at D200 prices yesterday. The deal is that the S3 is worse in a lot of ways at the process of taking pictures than the D70, but the final product is far and away better than anything I've seen in other cameras. I got the S3 because of the sensor and that is still the best thing around. I'd love to try out the D200 for awhile and compare the image quality.

What do I mean by process being worse?

Auto focus isn't as good, it seems common to have it focus on the wrong thing. On the D70 you could select the focus point in the view finder. I haven't found how to do that in the S3.

RAW files are so large they become useless to shoot. A S3 RAW file is uncompressed and 25 MB. Couple that with a slow write speed to the CF card and you've got a problem. Actually shooting isn't that big of a deal for studio work. But if you want to play back you have to wait 5 or 10 seconds an image for them to be reloaded and displayed. This is a pain when you are showing what you shot to a client.

I hate sounding so negative because I really like the camera, and love the images. Put it in JPEG F1 mode and you get skin tones like no other. Here's one right out of the camera.

I'm not sure I'd agree the other is better. Also what post was done on the D200 image? Mine is raw jpeg out of the camera.

The shot I posted had little or no skin tone adjustments. I shot that RAW and converted using ACR 3.3 with calibration tabs that I have tweaked to get those skin tones. No gaussian blur or other tricks. Remember that Misti is known for her creamy complexion so it may not be a fair comparison.

Like you said, the S3 does so many things so well, it's a shame that the mechanical aspects of focus/raw/card write just aren't up to par with even the consumer Nikon and Canon bodies.

All that said, at $1700 the D200 is a true bargain.

Thanks for the opinions. I was really impressed by both so this won't be any easy decision. (It sucks that I'm a dedicated Nikon AND Fujichrome shooter so I can't buy based on brand loyalty!)

I'm really interested in seeing what the WT-3 will be like. If it's as sweet as rumours persist than that might push me over to the D200.

Decisions, decisions... maybe my wife will let me buy both! Oh wait, still need to buy the new laptop too!

Thanks again,
Jim

Thanks for the Lou Giroud link.

But, like, what did he say? Gotta find my slide rule! (umm, goes with my film...)

Actually, that was great, I understand a lot more, including another reason we have "digital" lenses, for their constrained artifacts, way cool,

Lynn
