I have been shooting with a 5' octodome softbox and love the light but not sure I dont want to try something different. I think that I am going to grab a 22" beauty dish for my speedotron's, question is will I notice the difference and 2 should I purchase the honeycomb grid with it. @ B&H it runs about 118 for the dish and about 148 for the grid, I guess I could buy the dish and the grid later. but for about the same money it looks like I could get a mola seti. so if anyone has some input Im open for suggestions
I also have a dynalite uni 400 that i could buy accesories for but they seemed higher than the speedotron.
Thanks
Dennis

I did order Rolando's book but looks like it could be a few weeks before I get it but I hope that it offers a few answers also

dennis,

the speedo beauty dish is a great modifier. i use it for most of my beauty shots. it is essentially the inexpensive version of the mola demi. i have used pretty much every beauty dish out there, and find that i like the speedo one the best, next to molas.

$148 for the grid sounds high... i got mine at samy's for $50 or 60. but i do recommend getting the grid for it.

at any rate, i find the octadome to be too flat for my taste. didn't really care for the light quality that it gave.

Thanks Sean, that could be what Im not liking about the octa, when I first got it I loved it but I think the new has wore off. It was better than umbrellas so I will give it a try,
Is there a rcomended way to use i? I would assume that you would point it pretty much to the front of the face with just a small angle to it or would you use it like a ringlight where you want it on the same axis as the Lens? I looked at your site the other night and loved your work. Thanks for taking the time to answer

well, that's the beauty (no pun intended) of the beauty dish. there's no right way to use it, dennis. it really depends on how you want the shadows to fall.

i rarely use it fully frontal, but that's just because i like shadows. like any modifier, you really have to sit down and play with it and see what you like.

i really think you need to re-visit the good old silver umbrella. i think it's worth its weight in gold, and much better than the octadome. these images were shot with with a silver umbrella:

I think that I quit using the silver when I started digital since I was getting blown out highlights but I think I will try to find the silvers and try them again, I think I have the exposure more under control and might find I like them again. I dont think there is one perfect kind of lighting I will just keep changing to what fits the job and my mood
thanks again
