Interesting this new camera….
I have shot a few portraits and a couple of landscapes since I have gotten the Canon 5D. I noticed when I used my 85mm lens I had to get quite a bit closer to my subject to fill the frame unlike the Canon 10D and 20D’s that I have been using for the last 3 years or so. Consequently I replaced the 85mm with the 100mm for portraits after the first session. It will take some getting use to working with this full frame camera. I slapped on a 17-40mm lens lastnight to shoot some landscapes…WOW is that what wide angle is supposed to look like? I thought to myself. At its widest field of view I can see the rim of the lens in the corners of the picture…hmmmm very interesting indeed, I never saw that with any of the other camera bodies. Any way just a bit of observation on this new full frame camera that I thought I would share with people that might be some what interested….. If I try and tell my wife this she just shrugs and says that is nice…..lol.

I soooo wish I could go out and buy the 5D right now. If I wasntr afraid of getting shot when I walked back in the house I would do it.

Is there is a difference in the body's magnification rate? What were you shooting before Ron?

I've drooled on a 5D, but haven't gotten any closer yet.

Who doesn't want a 5D...or at least the new 30D.

The camera has a full 35mm sensor, so it doesn't have a magnification/cropping factor like a 10d or 20d.

Yes there is a difference in magnification. The 10D and the 20D are a 1.6 magnification where as the 5D has no magnification factor. It is a full frame sensor, and uses the entire lens unlike the 10D and 20D that use only part of the lens in capturing an image. My 10D is now for sale and my 20D is now the back up body. Hopefully I will be able to get a shoot in with a model this week to get a feel for how I will have to adjust.

I have not put it on e-bay yet I just put it in the local paper... It is a free ad for 30 days so I will go that route first if it does not go that way I will most likely go e-bay with it. I think the most I can get for it would be somewhere between $500 and $600 but I think closer to $500 Grrrrr..... I hate these things that don't hold value....

Interesting...not sure how that escaped my understanding, but very cool. I've never had a problem with the 1.3 factor on my 1D, but I would much prefer the full frame.

Happy Snapping

I had mine since early October when it was release and it take some getting used to - had the 10D before that. Normally use mine with a 50mm for portraits - it is pin sharp and very unforgiving for any mistakes. Even my 70-200mm 2.8 seems soft with this baby. I have a 20-35mm for landscapes - very nice on the full frame but not as sharp as your 17-40.

And please shoot RAW - it is worth it!!
