Hey All,

For those of you "teckies" out there, I prose this ? to you. I have been deciding between two canons. The 1dn and the 5D. So here is my question..with the "megapixel" war going on, how does a 12 mp jp compare to an 8mp camera with an image shot in raw. I really want the 1dn because of its 8fps rate, but I keep hearing "bigger (more MP) is better. What say yea?

Thanks,
Michael

ps...Im thinking in terms of printing. Alot of my work this year will go to print since I have been asked by an art gallery to sell my "art" work there. I appologize I have not shared any of it with you. Its very limited right now but Im going in blazin this year.

Did you mean a 12Megapixel JPG compared to an 8Megapixel RAW? IF so, I'm not sure you can really make a direct comparison - too many apple and orange analogies.

Better to compare the 12 MPixel RAW versus the 8 MPixel RAW image - with that comparison, you will have 50% more image information in the image - and you can guess what that means, all other things being equal.

Megapixels is not particularly relevent here. There is not enough difference unless you are planning on large prints or significant croppping. More important is the use you are going to put it to. The 1Dn is a professional camera whereas the 5D is a high end amature camera.

If the higher frame rate and better build are needed then go for the 1Dn. Don't forget that the 1Dn has a 1.3 x crop factor which means all your lenses will have a slightly longer view than you are used to on 35mm.

This will probably get moved to the Tech forum.

yes...I was comparing a 12mp jpeg to an 8mg raw. I was thinkig I want the 1dn but not sure how bad I would suffer in the megapixal area...yes..I realize 12 is better than 8..but im not trying to blow up a city block either. I recently shot a billboard for a radio station here and the size was 8ft tall by 6ft wide@. Looked great to me from the road.

the 1D is an awesome PROFESSIONAL camera, the 5D is a full frame version of the 20D.

Shooting models, I zoom in and crop, so the 1.3x conversion does not bother me.

a raw file form the 1d converts to a 45MB file, plenty big enough ofr most any printing.

I agree with some of what the others are saying. The difference isn't really an issue, probably, but only you know how big you'll print, or how much you may want to crop.

The other question becomes, do you want a professional camera, or an really good amateur one?

It really comes down to what you'll be shooting. If you're shooting glamour, why do you need 8fps? If you're shooting sports, then you'll need the quick focusing ability of the 1D. I believe the 5D has the same basic focusing system of the 10D and 20D and could possibly produce as many out of focus shots as it will in focus when shooting in continuous mode while trying to track a moving target.

Bottom Line: better image quality on the 5D and better/faster focusing on the 1D. I have 3 megapixel images that have been published which tells you that a lot of it is done in the post processing. Good luck.

Here's some advice I was given a while back -- "If you shoting 35mm film for most of your career, and were happy with the results ... and you make the switch to a digital camera, 6MB should be sufficient to satisfy all your needs." Two years later, I asked the same guy if I should move up to a 12 megapixel camera. He asked me why I didn't move from my 35mm to a medium format camera. I told him I was a bit overkill for the type of work I was doing. Exactly!

Hey Mark,

Thanks for the input. You touched on exactly my point. I want to start shooting more action this year..specifically surfing comps. My whole reason for the question is out of an 8mp camera shooting in raw...can I get the quality to blow up great prints at 24x36 or larger?
