This is a test. This is only a test.

Do I really think so? No. But apparently, something really juicy is needed to get things started.

As a matter of fact, I'm researching digital cameras, and have what I thought was a simple question for any of the digital gurus around here.

Thought people were interested in photography here.

I'm not ready to spend big bucks on this yet. I like Canon, had a Powershot G2 in the past. It had raw mode, manual exposure control, and manual focus, all of which would be nice, but at least I need a file format better than JPEG coming out of the camera.

So, do I need raw or will this DPOF or whatever work? I've been looking at the Powershot S80.

Thanks in advance.

G2..? Powershot S80..?

Wow,...like what's the difference..

Look into picking up a used digital SLR,..like a D60.. LarryAB is selling his now.. Get that, and a few lenses, and you'll be well on your way.. Heck, Andy McFarland still uses his D60..

Wow, thanks to JP for the plug.

Steve, whether you buy my camera or not, the tool of choice for photographers who are interested in the types of photography posted here is the SLR. Not that having a better camera will make your pictures better on it's own, but like with anything else, you're hobbling yourself if you try to use tools that aren't well suited for the job.

I am selling a Canon D60 with it's accessories, but not a lens. I just listed it on ebay a few hours ago, but PM me if you want to talk about it.

save some extra dough and get a digital SLR. you'll be happier in the long run. prices on canon 20Ds have fallen a bit and used ones must be even less (with the arrival of the 5D)

I had dreams of the 10D, then along came the 20D. Looked at my income....
and got the Rebel xT.
Very happy with it. And I can use my old lenses

I'm pretty much at that point myself. I can get a Nikon D50 w/zoom lens for $669 from B&H. That's more like the price range for me. Know anything about the D50?

Thanks,
Steve

Don't know much about Nikon, but I would look for just a body and get good glass. I didn't really believe this until I went digital. There is a difference.
Think of what your looking for in a camera, mirror lock-up,PC sync, RAW or what ever, then do your research. Check this link if you haven't already Dpreview
It has some good info. A lot of technical tidbits.

We all can't be like JP and lay down nearly $5k for a lens after getting a 5D
KEH has a couple if you need more JP

I found the Canon G2 to be a great little camera. It was only 3megapixels, but with RAW. Here are a couple of the old shots I did with it:

cheers,

Well Steve, you know most what I think about the digital vs. film transition... but let me add this about buying a digital camera...

If I had no Nikon mount glass and a fat budget, I'd go out and buy a Canon 5D, a Canon 70-200 2.8 IS, and whatever Canon has that's equivalent to a Nikkor 28-70 2.8 AF-S D... a build a system from there.

If I couldn't swing the 5D I'd go for a 20D which is a damn nice camera by the way.

If I had a significant investment in Nikon lenses and no way to liquidate it, I would by a D2X or a D1X with the buffer upgrade... which is what I did.

I have no experience with the D100, D200 or the D70. I remember when I was researching digital SLRs that there was something about the D100 that turned me off immediately and scratched it off my list. I can't remember what that particular thing was now though.

As it stands, I'm trying to decide whether it's worth it to liquidate my Nikon gear and switch to Canon. I'm not happy about the DX sensor thing and I'm beginning to wonder if Nikon has changed its commitment to the professional market.

...and yes, DIGITAL SUCKS! Sucks up money and memory that is.
