I'm working on headshots in my living room studio and the 135 F 2 I have is too long on my D 70. I'm using my old 28-85 3.5 -4.5 which is not a D lens, but works ok.

I'm wondering if shooting with the faster 85 mm will outweigh having the zoom range of the 17-55 ? I can only afford one for now, anyone have either and willing to share a reccomendation ?

Thanks

Everyone has an opinion on fast lenses. My advice, don't buy one if you don't have to. If you shoot a lot in low light environments and need the speed...go for it and you will get your money's worth.

On the other hand, if you shoot outdoors a lot in the middle of the day or have studio lights, then you probably will be fine with your kit lens.

Myself, I have had my D70 for almost a year and half and have only one lens, the 28-200 G 3.5-5.6 Nikon. I got it instead or the kit lens and still see no reason for another lens. It runs about $300 at B&H.

.............................

That's my opinion,

Jim

No studio lights, mostly available with some fill flash. That's why I'm looking for a faster lens.

You probably are a candidate for a fast lens.

I've "heard" that the 85mm f1.8 is even better than the f1.4 version..

The 17-55 has a much more usable range for editorial & commercial photography,..but for head shots, and glamour photography, up to full length if you have the room to use it, then yes, the 85 is a much better choice.. The differance between 55 & 85mm in terms of compression is significant.

When I moved into a smaller studio, my 105mm portrait lens was suddenly too long for anything but headshots. Now I use an 85mm 1.8 which is a gem of a lens, I'm really happy with it. When I need to go full body height I use a 28-70mm 2.8 AF-S D which I'm also happy with... it's a monster but it makes excellent images.

I've never used the 85mm 1.4 or the 17-55mm 2.8. That 17-55mm is on my list though; I need it for interiors. Zooms are a departure for me, I've always preferred fast primes, but so far, the 28-70mm has done well for me.

Good luck.

Huh? I just did a whopping bunch of research and no where did I hear the 1.8 is better than the 1.4. The 1.4 is three times the price for better bokeh and the little bit bigger aperture, but certainly is better than the 1.8.

I use the 28-70mm f/2.8 AFS for most of my general studio work. For headshots I just added the 105mm f/2.0D DC. That is an outstanding lens, but still runs $900+. You can also do wonders with the 70-200mm f/2.8 VR. Try to borrow or rent them at least once to save you the mistake of getting the wrong one.

I have the Nikon 17-55 f2.8 lens and LOVE it! I used to walk around with my 70-200 f2.8 lens on my camera 90% of the time, but since I got this lens, it's now my 90%er. Of course I shoot a lot of different things, weddings, catalogs, portfolios, a lil fashion....... but I find the range fantastic and the photos it produces are great as well!

Good luck,

Mitch
