I don't like *any* of those standard portfolio books. I hate anything that has a laminate sheet or plastic covering or enveloping my photos because I print exclusively on either NCR satin papers or the newer Konica-Minolta Satin paper that is completely waterproof (a local photo shop even submerged on to see if it would be affected, and it was not). Anyways..

I don't know where you can get these in the good ol' US of A, but here in Canada for my portfolio, I bought what Chapters Books calls a Memory Book. It is a bound book containing heavy, bright white card stock for pages (60 pages) and each page is protected by a tissue sheet. You mount your photo on the front of the card stock page and the sheet protects it. You have to lift up the semi-transparent tissue to see the photo, but when you look at the photo, you aren't fighting with the glare from room lighting as you would with those albums containing sheet inserts or laminate sheets.

They are expensive but I consider my portfolio worth the price.

They have them in a larger size, suitable for 8.5" x 11" sheets (25 pages) for about $30 CAD. I also bought a smaller one that holds 5" x 7" photos (60 pages), but that one was more expensive, at $50.

A little more expensive than your traditional stuff but very good products.

Best of Luck,

**** Blick Art Materials has the best deals on Prat I've seen. I like the Prat Pampa, it's heavy leather, nicely made but simple, not pretentious. The only drawback is the spiral page binding doesn't lend it itself to doing a landscape spread across both pages.

They have some of the other standards too, Pina Zangaro, Itoya, Alvin, etc.

This is what I use for my portfolio books and why:

9x12.

The books can fit into my laptop computer bag.

The books are presentable looking, and show an image larger than 8x10.

The books are still the standard for most modeling agencies.

The pages are a nice viewable size...you don't have to place it on a table to turn the pages..and it is a nice actual book..not one of those big bulky plastic 11x14 cases....and most times when I see other photographer's 11x14 books, they'll have 8x10 pics in them anyway..

I bought mine from www.models-mart.com the "Scuba" book, with removable pages...because it has the best binder...the one without removable pages cracked along the binder.. and it did this for a model I know too.. I believe this is because the materials don't hold up in cold climates like mine.. but, the ones with removable pages are made very well.. Mine feature 20 pages, for 40 pics..and are black.....black is the best presentational looking colour to have your work displayed against.

Yep,...that's what I do...and so far, everyone who I show my books to is really impressed with them..

Adorama out of New York has some nice Portfolios. You can get onto their web site and do a search on Prat. They offer a number of different sizes and styles. Good luck and good hunting.
